Action against ISIL in Iraq

Parliament has been recalled and asked to vote on the following motion:
That this House

Condemns the barbaric acts of ISIL against the peoples of Iraq including the Sunni, Shia, Kurds, Christians and Yazidi and the humanitarian crisis this is causing; recognizes the clear threat ISIL pose to the territorial integrity of Iraq and the request from the Government of Iraq for military support from the international community and the specific request to the UK Government for such support; further recognizes the threat ISIL poses to wider international security and the UK directly through its sponsorship of terrorist attacks and its murder of a British hostage; acknowledges the broad coalition contributing to military support of the Government of Iraq, including countries throughout the Middle East; further acknowledges the request of the Government of Iraq for international support to defend itself against the threat ISIL poses to Iraq and its citizens, and the clear legal basis that this provides for action in Iraq; notes that this motion does not endorse UK air strikes in Syria as part of this campaign and any proposal to do so would be subject to a separate vote in Parliament; accordingly supports Her Majesty’s Government, working with allies, in supporting the Government of Iraq in protecting civilians and restoring its territorial integrity, including the use of UK air strikes to support Iraqi, including Kurdish, security forces’ efforts against ISIL in Iraq; notes that Her Majesty’s Government will not deploy UK troops in ground combat operations; offers its wholehearted support to the men and women of Her Majesty’s armed forces.

I will be voting in favour of this motion. These decisions are never easy and as people who know me will be aware the fact that it is a three line whip is neither here nor there as far as I am concerned . Indeed I think on a matter like this there are few MP’s who would vote against their own opinion just to please the Party bosses.

My view is always to try and decide what is best in the national interest and on this occasion I am satisfied that it is in the national interest for the United Kingdom to play our part in a coalition of states prepared to take action against the self styled Islamic State. They do not appear to practise any form of Islam recognisable as such by any of the thousands of peaceful adherents to Islam in Bury and they are certainly not a State. The United Kingdom has been asked for help by the lawful Government of Iraq and therefore the legality of the action is not in dispute.

  1. The national interests? Your stirring up a hornets nest by dropping bombs on a population. One you are voting for the killing of innocent women & children, two your voting for martyrs to be made. When the retaliation is forthcoming I hope you can explain this to the families in the uk. As a society did we not learn from the last set of bombings or indeed Northern Ireland?

The only people to do well out of this will be arms dealers which the uk is very good at and the party in power, is that a general election coming up? A vote for murder is never an answer in my world but I was obviously brought up with a different value system on human life to you.

I know my opinion as a single voter in Bury North won’t effect the values you have but Murder is murder. Have a read through ‘Why are we the good guys?’ By David Cromwell and you will see maybe see through a different perspective. We are following Obama into his 7th war.
