The new Presidency of Donald J Trump in the United States will inevitably overshadow politics in the year ahead. Most people have such low expectations of a Trump Presidency that even if he does nothing it will be considered a success in some quarters.
Nearer to home elections in France and Germany may well impact on the UK’s negotiations to leave the European Union. We can expect candidates in both countries to play to their domestic audience. It would be a major upset if Angela Merkel did not retain her position but who would have thought that 12 months ago David Cameron would no longer even be a Member of Parliament never mind no longer Prime Minister?
