Last night I attended the Annual General Meeting of Bury Conservatives. After all the usual business which is traditionally dealt with at such a meeting such approval of the Annual Report and the Accounts and the electon of officers the main speaker was Councillor Alex Williams who is one of the Conservatives eight Candidates in the North West at this years elections to the European Parliament. Alex was the Parliamentary Candidate in Bury South at the last General Election so he is familiar with Radcliffe, Whitefield and Prestwich.

Elections to the European Parliament are held every five years and they are held at the same time across Europe not all on the 4th June because in some countries the elections are held at the weekend. Because we do not have any local elections in Bury this year unless a General Election is called the European Elections will be the only elections this year. Alex explained that William Hague had ruled out us ever joining the European Single Currency under a Consevative Government which I entirely applaud. It is interesting that my view of the Euro ie that we should never join which was once regarded as extreme is now official Party policy and in any event I believe this view has always been that of a majority of the British people.
