Conservatives takeover in Bury

At this years Annual Council Meeting the Conservative Group took over control of the Council with Councillor Bob Bibby being elected as the new Council Leader. The Group will now run Bury as a minority administration. This means that whilst they will be able to take certain decisions which can be done under Executive Authority there can not be any major change of direction as this would need the consent of full Council where the Conservative Group is three votes short of an overall majority.

  1. It is not more democratic when by far the smallest party is given two seats on the council by the Tories as a ‘gesture’. Just what is the reasoning behind this ‘gesture’? It’s certainly not connected with democracy. This action speaks volumes and shows that, despite your argument to the contrary, a grubby deal was definitely done.

  2. Oh come on David, who are you trying to kid? Do you think the public is that stupid? Of course a deal was made, why else would the Lib Dems suddenly get two seats on the GMPTA? Cllr Bibby says this was a ‘gesture’. A gesuture for what? Everyone knows that’s a euphemism for bribe. And how can you have the audacity to talk about democracy when the smallest party on the council should end up with these two powerful seats? That’s not democracy, that’s dodgy dealing.

If you feel so strongly about the integrity of your party then I suggest you get on to your libel lawyers since Wayne Campbell is reported in the Bury Times as saying a deal was clearly done with the Lib Dems. He asks why can’t you be honest with the public and I want to know the same.

  3. I can assure everyone that there were no ‘secret deals’ made with the Liberal Democrats. All appointments were made in public in the Council Chamber. The leadership of Bury Council reflects the fact that almost 4,000 people more voted Conservative than Labour and the fact that the Conservatives have three more seats than Labour.

It is by all measures a more democratic reflection of the election than last year when Labour controlled the Council despite having (again )received 4,000 less votes across Bury. They did however have one seat more than the Conservatives and remained in power.

How the Liberal Democrats vote in the Council Chamber is entirely up to them.

  4. Interesting how you conveniently forget to mention the double dealing shenanigans that led to the Conservatives taking control of the Council? Secret deals with the Lib Dems, promising them seats if they abstained? Pretty below the belt stuff if you ask me. Hardly the way you planed to take control is it? Then again after 21-years I suppose you’d sell your granny to get a sniff of power again
