Well today is the day. After 21 years of Labour rule in Bury it could all change today. I have been out campaigning throughout Bury over the last few days and the Conservative message has been much more readily received than has been the case in past years. People are undoubtedly prepared to listen to what we have to say. Conversely, people seem fed up with Labour and there is a feeling that it would be no bad thing if there were a change. Whether there is a change of control in Bury today depends on what happens in the key marginal wards. There is the opportunity to change and I hope the people of Bury will make that change. Please use your vote.

Looking at your comments this morning it looks like this announcement is something of a false dawn. One gain is not quite what your party expected. Why do you think that the Conservative message ultimately fell on deaf ears? Turnout wasn’t too bad, Labour popularity is falling all the time, so why after 21-years couldn’t you take Bury Council?
I doubt you were around to see what a mess Bury was in before Labour took control 21-years ago, but I was. What exactly have the Tories done to earn the promise of a ‘new start’ David? I see your leader, Bob Bibby, refuses to take questions off the electorate and is criticised as an ineffective and egocentric leader by his Conservative colleagues; I see a party who can’t even be bothered to vote on the Council’s budget; I see a party who opposes every bit of investment in Bury and then tries to take credit for it when it bears fruit and I see a party that is forced to do u-turns when William Hague arrives and pretend that you are interested in Radcliffe after all! This after one of your councillors strongly opposed investment in Radcliffe. Talk about false dawns. You have to earn the people’s vote not just bank on cynicims and apathy, which is the Tories’ only hope these days
