Nuclear weapons

There are perhaps few subjects which generate entrenched and polarised views as nuclear weapons. This evening the House of Commons has taken the decision to proceed to renew Britain’s nuclear deterrent. I think it was Labour’s unilateralist policies which led to them being unelected throughout the 1980’s. The majority of the British people realised that whilst in an ideal world we would not have nuclear weapons and indeed there would be no need for them in the real world the fact that we possess nuclear weapons is a great reassurance in a dangerous and volatile world. I am pleased that Conservative MP’s have put aside any party political advantage that would have been secured in defeating the Government on the issue and put the interests of our Country first. For the record I would have voted to renew the nuclear deterrent.
